Rowley’s the Jewellers is a long-standing independent business at the heart of Penarth’s high street. Candid Creative Studio has worked with Rowley’s over a number of years, initially refining the brand language and logo in 2018 to better reflect its heritage and position within the local retail landscape. More recently, Candid supported the business through a shopfront transformation, combining brand consistency, design and strategic funding support to deliver a cohesive and elevated presence on Glebe Street.

The brief was to refresh the external presence of the shop in a way that respected the heritage of the brand, improved visibility and kerb appeal. It was essential that signage, colour and materials aligned with the refined brand identity. Alongside this, the client required guidance navigating the Vale of Glamorgan Council‘s Commercial Improvement Grant, ensuring the project was both viable and financially supported.

The signage scheme uses clear acrylic and gold vinyl, installed by d3signs, allowing the painted timber fascia to remain visible and retain a traditional feel. The project strengthens the brand’s visibility on the high street and creates a shopfront that photographs well for digital and editorial use. It reinforces Rowley’s position as a trusted, premium independent jeweller, ensuring the external presentation reflects the quality of the service within. The project contributes to the wider high street by enhancing the visual quality of Glebe Street and the wider town centre, a key objective of the council’s grant, and supporting a long-standing local business. It is a small but meaningful piece of placemaking, demonstrating how considered design can positively impact a town centre environment.

Candid acted as a central point of coordination throughout the project, ensuring it moved smoothly from concept to completion. We guided the client through the grant application process, worked closely with the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and connected the client with trusted local suppliers. Working with Candid opened the door to funding that may not otherwise have been accessed, enabling a higher quality outcome for the business.

The result

The result is understated but distinctive. Clear acrylic signage with gold detailing sits confidently against a freshly painted timber fascia, allowing the craftsmanship of both the brand and the building to speak for itself. It is a project that demonstrates the value of bringing together design, promotion and place, not as separate disciplines, but as a single, considered approach.
